Some of the most breathtaking parts of South Africa are the winelands that surround Cape Town. A quick drive from the city center, Constantia, Franschhoek, or Stellenbosch boast stunning views with world-class wine. Enjoy a French-style MCC, a crisp Sauvignon Blanc, or a native Pinotage from a mountain-side vineyard looking over a valley of vines. While vineyard visits can easily be done in a day, I’d recommend making a weekend of it so you may relax and enjoy the countryside at a leisurely pace.
Babylonstoren Wine Estate
Part farm, part vineyard, part hotel, this is one of the most stunning locations I’ve visited in all my travels. Their glass tasting room is gorgeous, but don’t miss walking through the gardens and getting lunch from their farm to table restaurant.
Steenberg Estate
Another picturesque property, Steenberg Estate has both delicious food and award-winning wine. Try their Sparkling Chardonnay while sitting on the back patio with a plate of oysters – it’s pure bliss.
Klein Constantia
This might take the cake for my favorite wine in all of South Africa. While more modest in appearance than some of the larger estates, Klein Constantia makes incredible French-style wines with South African grapes. Try the Metis Sauvignon Blanc, and I dare you to not leave with a bottle (or case).
Cape Point Vineyard
Chill on the pillows strewn about the lawn with a bottle of wine while you watch the sunset; Cape Point Vineyard makes for a magical evening in a stunning location.
Eagle’s Nest
For a relaxing afternoon, bring a picnic or order a cheese board at this unpretentious spot. An extra bonus? Many locals will bring their dogs to play in the yard while they drink (so you can pet puppies AND drink wine!).
Groot Constantia
The oldest winery in South Africa, Groot Constantia is a Dutch-style estate that brings you back in time. Skip the tour and instead enjoy the wine at their restaurant terrace.
Lanzerac
One of the local varietals for which South Africa is known is the Pinotage, which is made by blending Pinot Noir and Hermitage grapes. Lanzerac has been bottling Pinotage longer than most, and have perfected the balance of red fruit and wood in this delicious wine.
Maison Estate
Chef’s Warehouse at Maison is a world-renowned restaurant for a reason – their food and service are top notch. Let the servers share their expertise and order wine based on your meal; you will not be disappointed.
La Motte
A red blend that is velvety and juicy, La Motte’s Millennium wine is delicious to enjoy on a beautiful afternoon in Franschhoek.
Delaire Graff Estate
For an upscale dining experience, a tasting menu at Delaire Graff with a wine pairing is the best way to delight your senses with their delectable food and wines. The hotel-cum-vineyard’s views and ambiance create the perfect setting for this noteworthy meal.
