When many people think of visiting the Cyclades, they think of the more “famous” islands like Mykonos and Santorini. To my delight, some of the smaller islands have all the charm with a fraction of the tourists (and price tags!). If you want stunning beaches, a mix of small Grecian villages and energetic towns, and incredible local cuisine, consider Paros your Grecian oasis.
Ranging from beach-front tavernas to craft cocktail bars, Paros has something to suit everyone in their lively town of Naoussa. While this town has everything you could need for an enjoyable Greek vacation, I encourage you to hop on an ATV and check out some of the pint-sized mountain or fishing villages, as well – you never know what you’ll learn when you lunch with the locals.
Nemobar
When you arrive via ferry in the port town, make Nemobar your first stop for a post-boat cocktail. Quaint patio seating is shaded under the ivy hanging from their trellised roof; at night it’s lit to a cozily romantic glow. Their specialty drinks are served in creative glassware, tempting you and your companions to try your way down the entire list.
Xamilothoris Patisserie
If you went to Greece and didn’t get local Greek pastries and coffee, did you even go to Greece? Try the Greek coffee but remember not to stir it (the coffee grounds are at the bottom of the cup). Cut the coffee’s bitterness with any of the delicious pastries – baklava, kataifi, diples, or melomakarona, to name a few – which are covered in local honey. With a vast outdoor patio, Xamilothoris is a space suitable to relax with friends or a laptop.
Sousouro
This is what brunch dreams are made of! Order an acai bowl or smoothie as a refreshing break from the Greek heat, but sit outside so you can watch the restaurant’s adorable dog run up and down the stairs next door. The white walls create a picturesque Greek backdrop, centrally located along the town’s winding old town. With strong WIFI and a friendly staff, this café welcomes tourists and digital nomads alike.
Taverna Glafkos
At the edge of town overlooking the water, Taverna Glafkos could rest on its view alone, but it doesn’t. Fresh salads, grilled fish, and mouthwatering pasta made this restaurant one of my favorites in Paros. The food was so good that one friend actually licked his plate clean (this is not an exaggeration – he licked it). Enough said.
Safran
I don’t typically like chickpeas, but I would bathe in the baked chickpea dish from Safran. Even in the heat of Greek summer, this dish made me wish I was curled up in front of a fire on a snowy day. Any food that can mentally transport you to a feeling is a win in my book. Assuming that the meal could not get any better from here, I was pleasantly surprised to find their seafood cooked to perfection, accompanied by a robust and fresh side salad.
Safran Itria Cocktail Bar
Itria Cocktail Bar
Hiding among the winding pathways of the old town, this cocktail bar blends perfectly into its traditional Greek surroundings. But make no mistake, this bar is far from traditional. Started by Italian expats, you can expect craft cocktails created with local flare, as well as perfected versions of the classics you know and love. Try the Espresso Martini – it’s the best I’ve had abroad to date.
Moraitis Winery
While Greek wine isn’t typically my favorite, Moraitis puts on a lovely tasting with six different varietals that was a pleasant surprise. Request a cheese and meat plate as an accompaniment, and don’t leave without ordering an extra glass of their driest white or Estate rosé.
Markakes
Renting an ATV is a great way to explore Paros, and the adorable fishing village of Pisa Livadi is a picturesque spot to stop for lunch. Markakes boasted a wide menu of freshly caught fish (the fish of the day in parchment paper on top of tomatoes and potatoes was delicious), but the highlight for me was a baked feta with honey.
Punda Beach Club
Pick between a lounge facing the crystal-clear sea or one surrounding the lively pool and bar area to create your perfect beach club day. High season runs early July through the end of August, but they’re open, albeit a bit more relaxed, for shoulder season, too. Cocktails, beach chairs, and music – Punda Beach is great for an upbeat day in the sun.
Looking for other islands like Paros? Just a quick ferry ride away are neighboring Naxos and Milos, both boasting a similar atmosphere and delectable culinary scene.
